Ten students receive college savings accounts
Released Dec. 15, 2004
CHARLESTON – Ten elementary school students from across the state are the recipients of $500 college savings accounts, the result of a Wednesday drawing.
Students will have the money invested in a SMART529 college savings account by The Hartford Co., which manages the Treasurer’s SMART529 college savings plan.
Registration forms for the drawing were sent home to parents of every public and private school student in the state. Treasurer Perdue and other officials held the drawing in December at the University of Charleston.
The Hartford supplied funds for the accounts. The firm will invest and manage the accounts. Parents or guardians may withdraw the money tax free upon a student’s high school graduation for education expenses, which include room and board.
SMART529 is a plan of the Board of Trustees of the West Virginia College Prepaid Tuition and Savings Program. Perdue is chairman of the board. Program administration services for SMART529 Select are provided by Hartford Life Insurance Company.
